Open-air markets (everywhere).
WE
LIKE:
colorful
money; all the different food, wine and beer;
ancient
sites; castles; art; nice people (the ones who
don't
yell at us); beach “scenery”.
WE
DISLIKE:
men
who spit (we're talking big, hacky globs) on the sidewalks (Spain
& Portugal); most train and bus station personnel; schlepping
our backpacks (especiallz in the heat); the billions of stairs
(Europe
is entirely uphill, you know); funky body odors (our own OR others);
cell-phone hysteria (most manic in Italy & Greece).
WE
MISS:
family,
friends, and PeeWee; the corned beef hash & free coffee refills
at Nick's; movies; TV (well, some); “italchos” at Terrilli's;
vegetables; coffee to go in styrofoam cups (with lids).
DAY
BRIGHTENERS:
clean
bathrooms, helpful people, hot water, water pressure, sites that
aren't closed, elevators and escalators, V polishing my toenails,
clean clothes, successful communication with locals - in their
language, mail from home (HINT).
